The theme for this wedding was football and this was represented in various ways throughout the day. There was also a pretty lengthy shot list in which we were going to shoot the wedding party in several football formations and situations in a planned outdoor location. Mother nature put here two cents in and derailed those plans and most of the shot list was thrown out the window as a result. This is why the first image in this post is so significant.
The show must go on and although plans were changed, we still had an awesome day!
This time of year, things are so busy it is difficult for me to keep up with the blog. I have so much material and no time to share it. Well, I am squeezing a post in today. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before the next one.

Although it was late December, we were actually blessed with some really nice weather and were able to shoot a fair amount of pictures outside. This particular shot was taken just as the sun was going down and was beginning to chill up quite a bit. At this point, we had taken most of the pictures from the day outside, including at the beach.
As the sun was going down, it was getting cold quick. We went down by the golf course for one last portrait, because we had shot everywhere else but there. As we were walking down the cart path, I noticed the groom was holding the brides bouquet and he heard me snap a few shots. As you can see, both the bride and groom had some fun with it and I think I may like this picture even better than the portrait we walked down there to take.
The first dance is one of my most anticipated shots in any wedding. I’m not sure exactly why, maybe it has something to do with my love for music. When most people think wedding photo, they probably visualize an image of the bride and groom either kissing or posing for the camera. First dance is always atop my list, if not first. I think it’s because you can always find a picture of two people kissing or smiling for the camera, they are flooded all over facebook. There is a certain class when I look at a nice image of two people dancing.
I am anticipating this image from the moment I enter the reception venue. I visualize where I am going to stand, where my assistant will be and any other variables that come into play. My assistant has a pretty important assignment during this time and needs to have some experience, or it does not work. That is why I am happy that my wife has taken this responsibility and has been working with me now for over a year.
The newlyweds have just been introduced to the reception and are now on showcase in the center of the dance floor. There is a moment when their song begins to play where they both seem to block out the reality that they are surrounded by every important person in their lives right now. The moment is usually just that, a moment and it’s gone. I always try to capture this moment if it happens because sometimes they come out of it, reality kicks in and it looks as if they are dancing for the camera.
This weeks image was inspired by a wedding I covered yesterday at this same venue. As my wife and I were on our way to the reception, we were going over a mental check of equipment/shots/timeline stuff that we usually go over while in route. I mentioned that on the dance floor, there is an 8 point star that plays well into my first dance images. One of my signature first dance shots is a backlit, highlighted image of the bride and groom on the dance floor. Because the image is backlit, if I compose the shot in such a way to capture some of the back light, it produces a star-like glare which is similar to the one on the dance floor.
As we arrived at the venue, I was lugging my equipment across the dance floor to the back of the room and I noticed that the beautiful floor I remembered was no longer there. They had replaced it with a plain dark flooring. I asked the manager and she said that they just decided to replace the floor a few months ago. No real reason, just because. Oh well, no big deal, I still captured plenty of cool images, however this just made me reflect back to this one which I happened to like a lot.

For most of my photographic career, I would only take portraits outdoors. I have always loved the idea of environmental portraits and I still do. Even though I had the equipment, I never really embraced the idea of tampering with studio portraits……until about a year ago. Although I am primarily a wedding/event photographer, I have always studied photography from a much broader spectrum. Most of the blogs I read and photographers I follow are not even wedding shooters. I have always felt that this helped me keep my style original instead of unconsciously copying someone else.
As I became more and more curious about studio portraiture, I decided to utilize my basement as a photo studio. I purchased a few different backdrops, set up my studio strobes in position and began to experiment with my favorite subjects, my kids. The thing that intrigued me about it was the total control of the light. When shooting outdoors, I sometimes have to wait for the sun to either come back out or go back behind the clouds for a particular shot. Not here, I choose my background and set my lights up exactly the way I want and shoot. I can shoot with one light or six lights, depending on the type of shot.
I since have shot portraits for families and kids, holiday portraits, communion portraits, sports composite portraits and professional headshots. It’s a nice thing to have in my back pocket. This particular image is a communion portrait for a good friend and beautiful subject. We took some traditional portraits, but some of my favorites were the semi-silhouette images that focus more on her gesture rather then her smile.
The Studio is Open!
I met Ryane and Mike last year when I photographed a wedding for their very good friends. They were both in the wedding party and spent some time with me that day (a good trial run). I have to admit, I do not approach each wedding as if I am attending a job interview, but it’s important to realize that each time you go out to do a job, you are potentially being evaluated.
A few months after their friends wedding, I receive a phone call from Ryane explaining that she enjoyed my stealth shooting style and how I handled documenting the entire wedding. The formals were quick, comical and relaxed and they were amazed at the images I was able to capture while remaining unseen at the ceremony and reception. This was especially important to Ryane as she does not like being in front of the camera, which is very common. This is perfect for me, because this is how I shoot.
To wrap this up, they both visited me this past weekend to see their images for the first time and I was able to witness their true reaction to the images. I was definitely pleased because I knew then that I made them both happy.
