This was actually taken during an engagement party, not really an engagement shoot. But I love it because it was totally not staged, nor did the soon-to-be-wed couple even know I was capturing the image.

Looking forward to getting out and taking some engagement photos once the weather stabilizes. Engagement shoots are usually done outdoors and incorporate nice landscapes. They are sometimes planned days in advance as to ensure the best weather and shooting conditions to incorporate the landscapes and a nice sunset.

At the time of the wedding, the bride and groom are surprised with a huge collage including several photos from the engagement shoot. The collage is framed and displayed at he entrance to the reception on an easel with a picture frame light for all to see. This is a nice touch.

There are plenty of benefits to covering the preparations and getting ready

One that I always try and capitalize on is that it could possibly be the last time the immediate family has to spend together before the events of the day begin. It is an emotional day for all and it's nice when I can capture some of that emotion.

Preparation coverage does not always mean bride/groom getting ready, dress, shoes,…

Preparation coverage does not always mean bride/groom getting ready, dress, shoes, rings, etc. For me, it simply means…..capture every bit of detail that the bride and groom may not always be paying attention to that pertains to the wedding day. This is always fun when the family is getting ready together and there is a lot going on under one roof. The flower girl who was shy at first, started to warm up to me and then let me do a full out portrait shoot while she posed for me. This was my favorite shot. I was setting up the dress, shoes and rings when I felt I was being watched. I caught her sneaking a peak. She smiled when she realized I caught her in the act and showed her the picture proof. We became good buddies after that.

Taking pictures of the rings is very much a part of documenting the details

Using the invitation in the shot is a nice touch, or perhaps some other significant item. This is one area that is open to many creative possibilities.

Covering the bride getting ready is a fun start

It gives me time to try and capture some creative shots while the bride, family and bridesmaids get ready for the busy day ahead. The key is to get there as early as possible and give myself plenty of time to get those creative juices flowing without getting in the way. Prep shots are the beginning of the wedding album, because it's where the story begins.

Preparations and details are where it begins

This starts the story book of images that are captured throughout wedding the day. These are kinda the behind-the-scenes type of shots. It's my job to provide the memories and to allow the bride and groom to slow it down and take some of it in. I wish to start a series of detail images that are captured before the ceremony and before any portraits are taken.
